The Earth is our home; that is what we teach our children. Unfortunately, we are not treating our home with the respect and care it needs. Climate change and global warming is real and if we do not teach our kids how to treat our home properly while continuing to make changes ourselves, we are in for a rude awakening. The earth will run out of resources and we wont have a suitable place to live. Raising earth conscious children is a good way to make sure that future generations are doing as much as they can to take care of our planet.

There are many things we can do and steps we can take to preserving our earth. At this point, there is no excuse to taking better care of our planet. Here are five steps to begin raising earth conscious children.

Be the example

As children grown, they tend to copy everything that their caregivers are doing. So, if our goal is to start living more sustainably and protecting our planet from all the hardship it has already faced, then we must lead by example.

If you are not really sure how to be more eco-friendly, researching ways to better protect your environment is a good start. Educating ourselves about everything is super important, so that we can provide all that knowledge to our children and be the example.

Spend time in nature

It is so good to get outside everyday. Even if it is only for 10 to 20 min, it is better than nothing. Allowing children to get outside whether its to play, explore, throw a ball around, go the park etc, will help them appreciate the outdoors. There is so much beauty on this earth. Getting you children outside will get them interested in all of earths nature. This will help them want to keep our planet looking beautiful and they will want to take care of it versus ruining it.

eco friendly

Another good way to spend time in nature is gardening. Teaching children how to garden opens their eyes to a number of things. Growing fruits, veggies and even flowers can show children how plants need soil, water, and the sun to grow. Giving them the hands-on opportunity to care for their plants can teach them that they have a direct impact on mother nature.

Watching their plants grow helps remind them that all living things work together to grow and thrive! When their plants grow, the children feel so proud of all their hard work. Not everyone has access to land to grow plants on. That should not stop you from gardening. There are many plants that can grow in pots out on your patio or porch. If you live in an apartment without a balcony you can even get your kids into planting inside. The idea is to let your children plant the seeds, nurture their plant and watch it grow. They will still be in awe of what they have accomplished.

Teach the 5 Rs

Many are used to the 3 Rs – Reduce, Reuse, & Recycle, but as discussed in our post on zero waste living, we mention how Bea Johnson of Zero Waste Home talks about the 5Rs. Those 5Rs include: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rot. They are all important, but the most important one is to simply REDUCE your waste.

The United States produces over 200 million tons of garbage per year! That is a lot of garbage, which is why we need to do better at protecting our planet. We can teach our children about the bad habits we currently have and ways to fix them. As the parent, you can teach your children how to refuse the things they do not need, reduce the amount of waste they produce, reuse the things they already have, recycle certain items as often as possible and rot organic matter – also known as compost. Composting not only reduces waste in your home, but can be used to nourish the plants in their garden.

When reducing waste, teach your kids how to be more aware of the number of items they consume and throw away. This practice can be as simple as having your kid use their favorite reusable lunchbox container at school. You can also try making a fun and creative activity out of this. Children love to be creative and challenged. If you want to implement reducing waste in the home, your family can start by practicing a zero waste lifestyle. The zero waste life style allows you to be conscious of the way you are living, while trying to not produce so much trash.

Teach your children about animals

environmentally conscious children

Teaching children about animals can help them learn compassion and responsibility. Children are so innocent and love animals. Their curiosity will help them engage more when learning everything there is to know about animals. By learning about where they live and what they eat, children can learn ways to protect the Earth that we all live on. This allows them the knowledge they need to start taking care of our planet. It is not just about us humans, but the animals too.

Incorporate sustainable products in your daily lives

There are so many ways to live a more sustainable and eco – friendly lifestyle these days. Having reusable products such as the ones by ecozoi is a great starting point!

Before you purchase reusable items though, take a look around your house and see what you already have. This is a great exercise to do with your kids. We want to teach them that by reusing products we are producing less waste. There will be times when disposable products will be used and that is okay. If you teach them the best way to discard of those products, they will learn what should get recycled, composted, or go to the landfill. Many restaurants and other public places are slowly starting to implement those three forms of throwing away trash which is great. Producing less waste helps our planet and hopefully in an effort to raising earth conscious children, they implement this into their life as they get older.
